The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is one of the most sacred and iconic temples in Varanasi. Situated near the Assi River, it is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is a cornerstone of the city’s spiritual life.

Historical Significance

  • Founder: The temple was established in the early 16th century by the famous saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas, the author of the Ramcharitmanas.

  • The Vision: Legend has it that Tulsidas ji had a divine vision of Lord Hanuman at this very spot. He established the idol exactly where he saw the deity.

  • Meaning of the Name: "Sankat Mochan" translates to "Reliever from Troubles." Devotees believe that praying here mitigates the hardships of life and neutralizes the ill effects of planets like Saturn (Shani) and Mars (Mangal).

Unique Features

  • Facing the Master: Unlike many other temples, the idol of Lord Hanuman here is positioned in a way that he is looking directly at his master, Lord Rama, whose idol is placed right across.

  • The "Monkey Temple": The temple complex is home to hundreds of monkeys. While they are generally harmless, visitors are advised to be mindful of their belongings (especially spectacles and food).

  • Famous Besan Ladoos: The temple is world-renowned for its Besan ke Ladoo (gram flour sweets). It is considered a must-have Prasad, prepared with pure desi ghee.

The Music Festival (Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh)

Every year, around the festival of Hanuman Jayanti (usually in April), the temple hosts a massive 5-6 day classical music and dance festival.

  • It is one of India's most prestigious cultural events.

  • Top-tier artists from across the globe perform here for free as a "Haazri" (spiritual offering) to the deity.
