Anand Bhavan is a historic house museum in Prayagraj (Allahabad), which served as the ancestral home of the Nehru family. It is not just a building but a landmark that witnessed the shaping of India’s independence movement.

Here is a detailed look at Anand Bhavan:

1. Historical Significance

  • The Nehru Connection: It was purchased by Motilal Nehru in 1930 because the original family home (Swaraj Bhavan) had become a major headquarters for the Indian National Congress.

  • Political Hub: This house was the site of many crucial decisions during the Freedom Struggle. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and Subhash Chandra Bose frequently stayed and held meetings here.

  • Birthplace of Leadership: It was the home of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and the childhood home of Indira Gandhi.

2. What to See Inside

The house was donated to the Indian government in 1970 by Indira Gandhi and converted into a museum.

  • The Bedrooms: You can see the perfectly preserved rooms of Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi, containing their original furniture, books, and personal belongings.

  • The Study: Jawaharlal Nehru’s study is filled with thousands of books, reflecting his intellectual nature.

  • Gandhiji’s Room: There is a dedicated room where Mahatma Gandhi used to stay during his visits, kept in its original simple state with his spinning wheel (Charkha).

  • Indira Gandhi’s Wedding Spot: The courtyard where Indira Gandhi married Feroze Gandhi in 1942 is a point of interest for many history buffs.

3. Key Attractions on the Premises

  • Jawahar Planetarium: Built in 1979, it is located within the same complex. It hosts sky shows that are very popular with children and students.

  • Swaraj Bhavan: Located right next to Anand Bhavan, this was the older Nehru residence. It now houses a museum focusing on the life of Indira Gandhi and the history of the Congress party.
