Shantikunj Gayatri Parivar
Shantikunj is a world-renowned spiritual center and the headquarters of the All World Gayatri Pariwar (AWGP). Located in Haridwar, it was established in 1971 by Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya, a great saint, social reformer, and scholar.
Unlike many traditional ashrams, Shantikunj is described as an Academy for Social and Spiritual Awakening.
1. The Core Philosophy
The foundation of Shantikunj is based on two pillars:
-
Gayatri Mantra: It is considered the center for the scientific study and practice of the Gayatri Mantra.
-
Yagya (Sacrificial Fire): It promotes the ancient tradition of Yagya for environmental and mental purification.
-
Mission: Their motto is "Vichar Kranti" (Thought Revolution)—the idea that to change the world, one must first change their own thoughts.
2. Key Attractions Inside the Complex
-
Akhand Deep: A "continuously lit lamp" that has been burning since 1926. It is the source of spiritual energy for the entire mission.
-
Gayatri Mata Temple: A beautiful, peaceful temple dedicated to Mother Gayatri.
-
Sapt Rishi Vatika: A serene garden dedicated to the seven great sages (Sapt Rishis) of ancient India.
-
Devatma Himalaya: A unique model of the Himalayas showcasing various pilgrimage sites and the spiritual energy of the mountains.
-
Yagya Shala: Every morning, massive group Yagyas (fire rituals) are performed here. Anyone, regardless of caste or creed, can participate.
3. Unique Features
-
Self-Service (Seva): The ashram runs entirely on the voluntary service of its followers. You won't see many paid staff; everyone from the kitchen to the gardens is a volunteer.
-
Scientific Spirituality: They have a research wing called Brahmavarchas Shodh Sansthan which aims to bridge the gap between ancient science and modern logic.
-
Simple Living: Shantikunj provides free boarding and lodging for people who come for spiritual training (Shivir), provided they follow the strict discipline of the ashram (simple food, no addictions, and morning prayers).
