Sarnath is one of the most important spiritual sites in the world, located just 10 km from Varanasi. It is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya.

Here is a guide to the history and major attractions of Sarnath:

1. Historical & Religious Significance

  • The First Sermon: Known as Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, this was where Buddha taught the "Four Noble Truths" and the "Eightfold Path" to his first five disciples.

  • The Birth of the Sangha: It is here that the Buddhist community (Sangha) was officially established.

  • Ancient Name: In ancient texts, Sarnath was known as Isipatana (the place where holy men landed) or Mrigadava (Deer Park).

2. Major Landmarks to Visit

  • Dhamekh Stupa: This is the most massive and iconic structure in Sarnath. It marks the exact spot where Buddha gave his first sermon. It is a solid cylindrical tower made of bricks and stone, decorated with delicate floral carvings.

  • Chaukhandi Stupa: This marks the spot where Buddha first met his five disciples. It is topped by an octagonal tower built by the Mughals to commemorate the visit of Emperor Humayun.

  • Ashoka Pillar: Only the base remains today, but this is the pillar that once held the Lion Capital, which is now the National Emblem of India.

  • Sarnath Archeological Museum: A must-visit. It houses the original Lion Capital of Ashoka (from the 3rd century BCE) and a world-famous statue of Buddha in the "Dharmachakra Pravartana" mudra.

3. Modern Temples

  • Mulagandha Kuti Vihar: A beautiful modern temple built by the Maha Bodhi Society. It features stunning frescoes painted by a Japanese artist and houses a golden statue of Buddha.

  • Garden of Spiritual Wisdom: A quiet park with sculptures depicting the life of Buddha.

  • Giant Buddha Statue: An 80-foot-tall standing Buddha statue nearby, built by Indo-Thai collaboration.
