Hanuman Dhara
Hanuman Dhara is one of the most sacred and miraculous sites in Chitrakoot. Located on a steep hillside, this spot has a direct connection to the epic Ramayana.
Here are the key details about this divine location:
1. The Mythological Legend
According to legend, after burning Lanka, Lord Hanuman returned with his body still burning from the intense heat of the fire.
-
He sought a solution from Lord Rama to cool his body.
-
Lord Rama then shot an arrow into the mountain, causing a stream of cool water to gush out.
-
Hanuman ji bathed under this stream to find relief, giving the place the name 'Hanuman Dhara' (The Stream of Hanuman).
2. The Miraculous Water Stream
The most striking feature of this temple is a natural stream of water that continuously falls over the left shoulder or head of the massive idol of Lord Hanuman.
-
The source of this water and where it disappears after flowing over the idol remains a mystery to this day.
-
Devotees collect this water as Prasad, believing it has healing properties.
3. Sita Rasoi (Sita's Kitchen)
If you climb a bit higher from the main Hanuman Dhara temple, you will reach 'Sita Rasoi'.
-
It is believed that Goddess Sita cooked meals here during their exile. You can still see ancient marks of utensils and a traditional rolling pin etched in stone.
-
This spot offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Chitrakoot town.
4. How to Reach
-
The Stairs: To reach the temple, you need to climb approximately 360 to 500 steps. It is a steep climb that usually takes about 30–45 minutes.
-
Ropeway: For those who cannot climb, a Ropeway (Udan Khatola) facility is now available, which takes you to the top in just a few minutes.
Essential Tips for Visitors:
-
Monkeys: Just like Kamadgiri, this place is full of monkeys. Be very careful with your spectacles, mobile phones, and bags.
-
Timing: The temple is open from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM. It is best to visit early in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat.
-
Location: It is situated about 4–5 km away from the main Ram Ghat.
While the climb to Hanuman Dhara can be physically demanding, the peaceful atmosphere and the sight of the eternal water stream make it a deeply rewarding experience.
