Lete Huye Hanumanji Mandir
The Lete Hue Hanuman Temple (also known as Bade Hanuman Ji Mandir) is one of the most unique and spiritually powerful shrines in Prayagraj. It is located right at the edge of the Sangam (the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati), near the walls of the Prayagraj Fort.
Here is why this temple is famous and unique in the world:
1. The Unique Reclining Posture
This is perhaps the only temple in the world where the idol of Lord Hanuman is in a reclining (lying down) position.
-
The idol is massive, measuring about 20 feet in length.
-
It is situated below the ground level in a pit-like structure.
2. The Legend (Mythology)
-
Resting after Victory: According to the Ramayana, after the victory in Lanka, Hanuman Ji was exhausted. Upon reaching this spot, he decided to rest on the suggestion of Goddess Sita.
-
The Merchant Story: Another legend says a wealthy merchant was transporting this heavy idol by boat. When he reached Prayagraj, the idol became so heavy that it couldn't be moved further. Lord Hanuman appeared in the merchant's dream and expressed his desire to stay there.
3. The "Ganga Snan" Miracle
A very special phenomenon occurs every year during the monsoon season:
-
When the water level of the river Ganga rises, the water enters the temple.
-
It is a local belief that Goddess Ganga rises specifically to touch the feet of Lord Hanuman to pay her respects.
-
Only after the river water "bathes" the idol does the flood level in Prayagraj usually begin to recede. This event is celebrated with great joy by the locals.
