Shooltankeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most serene and spiritually significant temples in Varanasi, often called the "Dakshin Dwar" (Southern Gate) of the holy city.

Unlike the crowded temples in the city center, this temple is located in a peaceful village setting and carries a unique legend regarding the River Ganga.

1. The Legend of the Trident (Shool)

The name "Shool-tankeshwar" comes from the word Shool (Trident).

  • Stopping the Ganga: According to mythology, when the River Ganga was descending to Earth and approaching Kashi, she was flowing with immense force. It is said that she intended to sweep the holy city away with her.

  • The Divine Intervention: To protect Kashi, Lord Shiva struck his Trishul (Trident) into the ground at this spot. The impact was so powerful that the river had to slow down and bow to Shiva’s command.

  • The Vow: Ganga promised Shiva that she would flow gently through Kashi and would never harm its residents. This is why the river turns "Uttravahini" (flowing towards the North) after passing this point.

2. Spiritual Importance

  • Self-Manifested (Swayambhu): The Shivling here is believed to be Swayambhu, meaning it appeared on its own.

  • Equivalent to Prayag: It is mentioned in the Kashi Khand (ancient scriptures) that worshipping Shooltankeshwar Mahadev gives the devotee the same spiritual merit as performing rituals at the Sangam in Prayagraj.

  • The Madhaveshwar Connection: Originally, the temple was established by a sage named Madhav Rishi, and the deity was known as Madhaveshwar. After the incident with the Trishul, it became famous as Shooltankeshwar.

3. Location and Atmosphere

  • Setting: Located in Madhopur village, about 15 km south of the main Varanasi city (near the Rohaniya area).

  • Vibe: The temple is situated right on the banks of the Ganga. It is incredibly peaceful, surrounded by Peepal trees and open skies, making it a perfect spot for meditation.

  • Architecture: It is a modest but beautiful structure. Besides the main Shivling, you will find idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya, and Hanuman Ji.
