Ram Ghat in Chitrakoot is the most important and vibrant center of the city's spiritual life. Located on the banks of the holy Mandakini River, it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana spent a significant portion of their 11-year stay in the forest.

Here is a breakdown of why it is so special:

1. The Legend of Tulsidas

The most famous story associated with Ram Ghat involves the great poet Goswami Tulsidas (author of the Ramcharitmanas).

  • It is said that Tulsidas was rubbing sandalwood paste (Chandan) on this ghat when Lord Rama and Lakshmana appeared before him as young boys.

  • To remind Tulsidas of his vision, a famous couplet was written:

"Chitrakoot ke ghat par, bhai santan ki bheed,

Tulsidas chandan raghain, tilak det Raghubeer."

  • You can still find a designated spot and a statue dedicated to this event on the ghat.

2. Evening Mandakini Aarti

Just like the Ganga Aarti in Varanasi or Rishikesh, a magnificent Deep-Daan and Aarti ceremony is held here every evening at sunset.

  • The atmosphere becomes electric with the sound of bells, chants, and hundreds of diyas (lamps) floating on the river.

  • It is generally less commercial and more peaceful than the Varanasi Aarti.

3. Boat Rides & River Rituals

  • Boating: One of the most popular activities is taking a colorful wooden boat ride. The boatmen often narrate local legends as they row you across the Mandakini.

  • Holy Dip: Thousands of devotees take a ritual bath in the river here, believing it cleanses them of sins.

  • Saffron & Sandalwood: You will find many sadhus and priests on the ghats offering Chandan Tilak (sandalwood mark) to visitors, keeping the tradition of Tulsidas alive.

4. Major Attractions Around Ram Ghat

  • Bharat Milap Temple: A short walk away, marking where Bharat met Rama.

  • Janaki Kund: Located upstream, believed to be the private bathing spot of Goddess Sita.

  • Shopping: The markets lining the ghat are famous for wooden toys, Ayurvedic herbs, and religious books.
