Mansa Devi Temple is one of the most famous and highly revered Hindu temples in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Goddess Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti, it is located atop the Bilwa Parvat on the Shivalik Hills.

The name "Mansa" means "Wish," and it is believed that the Goddess fulfills all the sincere wishes of her devotees.

1. Religious Significance

  • The Wishing Goddess: Mansa Devi is said to have emerged from the mind of Lord Shiva. She is also regarded as the sister of the serpent king, Vasuki.

  • Siddh Peeth: Along with Chandi Devi and Maya Devi, this temple forms the Siddh Peeth Triangle in Haridwar. It is a place where prayers are believed to be answered quickly.

  • The Sacred Tree: There is a tradition where devotees tie a red thread on the branches of a sacred tree inside the temple complex while making a wish. Once the wish is fulfilled, they return to untie the thread.

2. How to Reach the Temple

Since the temple is on a hilltop, there are two ways to get there:

  • The Ropeway (Udan Khatola): This is the most popular method. It offers a thrilling ride with a panoramic view of the entire Haridwar city and the Ganga flowing below.

  • Trekking: For those who prefer a physical challenge, there is a pedestrian path. It is a steep climb of about 1.5 to 2 km and takes around 30–45 minutes.

3. Temple Architecture

  • The temple houses two main idols of the Goddess: one with three mouths and five arms, and the other with eight arms.

  • The architecture is traditional North Indian style, and the temple complex provides a cooling breeze even in the summer due to its altitude.
